The Decision to Use Alternative Payment Methods, State Dependence or Unobserved Heterogeneity?

چکیده

In recent years interest-bearing checking accounts and ATM cards have become quite ubiquitous. These alternative payment methods offer many benefits, but a majority of households have yet to adopt these technologies as a means of payment. The goal of this paper is to answer why some households have been reluctant to make the switch. This paper uses dynamic discrete choice techniques to model household behaviour in adopting alternative payment technologies. The Bank of Italy’s Survey of Household Income and Wealth is used to conduct this study. Preliminary evidence indicates that the household previous financial adoption decisions are a major factor in current period adoption choice.

Will that be Cash, Check, or Debit? The Decision to Use Alternative Payment Methods: State Dependence or Unobserved Heterogeneity?

This paper investigates the household decision to adopt alternative payment technologies (financial innovation); examples of financial innovation are interest-bearing checking accounts, credit cards, and ATM cards. The obvious advantage of these payments tools is that they allow households to economize on their money holdings while still providing liquidity services. Through technological progr...

Smoking Persistence in Europe: A Semi-Parametric Panel Data Analysis with Selectivity

We provide new cross-country evidence on smoking persistence in Europe, which can be due to both true state dependence and individual unobserved heterogeneity. We distinguish between the two by using semi-parametric panel data selection methods, applied to both the smoking participation and the cigarette consumption decision. We find that for both smoking decisions true state dependence is gene...

Handling initial conditions and endogenous covariates in dynamic/transition models for binary data with unobserved heterogeneity

Distinguishing between longitudinal dependence due to the effects of previous responses on subsequent responses and dependence due to unobserved heterogeneity is important in many disciplines. For example, wheezing is an inflammatory reaction that may ‘remodel’ a child’s airway structure and thereby affect the probability of future wheezing (state dependence). Alternatively, children could vary...

Is There a Stepping Stone Effect in Drug Use? Separating State Dependence from Unobserved Heterogeneity Within and Between Illicit Drugs

Empirically, teenagers who use alcohol or marijuana in one period are more likely to use hard drugs in the future. This pattern can be explained by a causal effect of soft drug consumption on future consumption of hard drugs (i.e., state dependence between drugs or stepping-stone effects) or by unobserved characteristics that make people more likely to use both soft and hard drugs (i.e., correl...

Smoking Persistence Across Countries: An Analysis Using Semi-Parametric Dynamic Panel Data Models with Selectivity

Smoking Persistence Across Countries: An Analysis Using Semi-Parametric Dynamic Panel Data Models with Selectivity We study smoking persistence in ten countries using data from the European Community Household Panel. Such persistence may be due to true state dependence but may also reflect individual unobserved heterogeneity. We distinguish between the two by using semiparametric dynamic panel ...
